• Founded in 1687

  • Ukraine, Sokal, Lviv Region

In the first half of the 17th c. all buildings in Sokal were wooden. The first sacral buildings only started being built of brick or stone, and only three such monuments have been preserved in Sokal up till now, one of which is the Synagogue of Sokal.
It is assumed that at first, probably, somewhere in the 16th c., a wooden synagogue was built in Sokal, and it was burnt in 1637 during the town fire. In the period between 1687 and 1648 a new one was built in its place, but already made of bricks, and it has survived up till present.
The very synagogue is in the form of a quadrangle and is considered to be a defensive-type building. It stopped functioning during World War II.
