Choral synagogue in Uzhhorod

The Uzhhorod synagogue is a choral synagogue of the Orthodox community of the Ashkenazi Jews, built under the project of architects Gyula Papp and Ferenc Szabolcs. The synagogue was opened on July 27, 1904 with no solemn ceremonies: in the evening, at 7 p.m., the holy books of Jews –the Torah – were brought to the new synagogue from the prayer house, and after that a prayer and consecration of the building took place.
The synagogue was built in the neo-Moorish style – romantic style, with inserted Byzantine and Arab-Moroccan motives. The central balcony depicting the Star of David within a large circle constituted a bright façade element. In the post-war years the Soviet authorities reconstructed the building, and its exterior underwent drastic changes.
