The Franciscans are a catholic monk order founded by St. Francis of Accisi. In the XVIth century the reform movement gained popularity in Zakarpattia, and this led to the order dissolution. However, that did not prevent the Franciscans from getting back half a century later and restoring the monastery and the cathedral which had been destroyed by the Tatars at the beginning of the 18th century. Later the monastery was rebuilt, in the Soviet times (since 1945) the Museum of History was located in the building, its unique paintings were destroyed, while the monastery school was transformed into a library.
The monastery is an architectural complex consisting of the stone and brick cathedral and a two-storeyed building with monks’ cells.
