• Founded in the 1920ies

  • Ukraine, Rakoshyno, Zakarpattia Region

The church was built in the 1920ies under the project of the émigré officer from Russia Vsevolod Kolomatsky. V. Kolomatsky painted the interior, but his paintings were not preserved. The church is of an interesting form — the appearances of the cross, crowned with seven domes. In the Soviet times the museum of atheism was accomodated in the church.
On February 24, 2001 by the decree of the Bishop of Mukachevo and Uzhhorod Ahapit (Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate) the Holy Protection Monastery was founded. Archimandrite Mytrofan (Shymon) became the abbot.
The main sanctuary of the Monastery is the Iberian Icon of the Mother of God, presented by the Patriarch of Jerusalem Ioanykiy to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ Alexy І (Simanskiy), who, in his turn, presented the icon for loyal service to the patriarchy to the schemanun Mokryna of the settlers of the St. Nicholas Monastery of Mukachevo. And from there in 1994 the wonder-working icon was transported to Rakoshyno.
